Eligible customers can receive a rebate for an existing Level 2 charger and a monthly bill credit in return for agreeing to charge their vehicle in off-peak hours. The goal of this program is to avoid charging during certain hours when demand for electricity is highest which not only helps keep electric rates sustainable for all HG&E customers, but also helps save on carbon emissions!

Electric Vehicle Charger Program Incentive Options:

  • Up to $450 rebate for a Level 2 charger (rebate applied as on-bill credit)
  • Fully Electric Vehicles
  • PHEVs that meet requirements listed to the right 
  • On-board charging speed must be capable of charging at 6 kW or greater** (typical for newer EVs) 
  • Charger must be connected to 40 amp breaker or greater***
  • Battery greater than 18 kWh**
  • Must enroll in HG&E’s Connected Homes Program if enrolling a Connected Homes Compatible EV Charger or a Telematics Equipped Electric Vehicle. Otherwise, must be able to schedule charging during off-peak hours (9PM-7AM M-F).
  • $5/month bill credit, and
  • Up to $250 rebate for a Level 2 charger (rebate applied as on-bill credit)
  • Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles
  • Fully Electric Vehicles with on-board charging speeds less than 6 kW** 
  • Fully Electric Vehicles with Level 2 chargers connected to < 40 amp breaker***

Additional HG&E Incentives Available: 

Residential Energy Assistance Program (Financial assistance at 0% interest): Service upgrades, equipment costs and installation costs associated with charging infrastructure may be eligible for financial assistance at 0% interest through HG&E’s Residential Energy Assistance Program. Please note, if you are interested in receiving assistance through this program to help cover these costs, you will need to submit your application for that program separately.

How does it work? 

  • If you have or will be installing a Connected Homes Compatible EV Charger or a Telematics Equipped Electric Vehicle

    • You will need to sign up for HG&E’s ‘Connected Homes’ program administered by our energy services partner, NextZero. Through the Connected Homes program, your EV charger or the on-board charger on the vehicle itself (if you have a Telematics-capable vehicle) will be remotely adjusted a few times each month during which the charger or vehicle will be incapable of charging. Up to 170 hours of these events may be called per year. This is approximately 5-6 peak events/adjustments per month, though the actual number of peak events may vary and in many months adjustments will be made only 3-4 times. 
    • The hours vary depending on the season, but typically occur between 4 and 8 p.m. You will be notified of upcoming adjustments via email and/or text. The notification will include the event’s start and end times, and you will be given the opportunity to opt out if needed. Customers can opt out of any event at any time either by clicking on the “Opt-Out” button on the event notification, or by manually adjusting the charger settings on the vehicle. Customers who choose to opt out of an adjustment will not be issued an incentive for that month. To successfully enroll a Chargepoint, EvoCharge or Emporia charger in Connected Homes, your charger will need to be connected to your home Wi-Fi network and you will need to provide access to the device through a Wi-Fi connection. If you are enrolling a Telematics-capable vehicle, the charger will only be controlled if the vehicle is at home and plugged in. All Connected Homes participants will also need to agree to the Connected Homes program terms and conditions, (please review these before applying).

  • If you DO not have a Connected Homes Compatible EV Charger or a Telematics Equipped Electric Vehicle

    • To be eligible, you will need to own a Level 2 fast charger as well as an all-electric vehicle, and will need to agree to schedule Level 2 charging to occur only between the hours of 9:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m. Monday-Friday, and anytime on weekends. HG&E will have the ability to monitor and verify that Level 2 charging is occurring outside of the above windows through HG&E’s Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI).

Note Regarding Electricians and Installation Costs:

Typically, Level 2 chargers need to be installed by licensed electricians, and labor costs average around $500-$1,000. However, we have seen installation costs as high as $2,000 depending on the location (for example, a detached garage). Because of this, and because it can take weeks to schedule an electrician, be sure to plan well in advance. You can visit this PlugStar webpage to find a list of electricians in the area.

 

How to Apply:  

HG&E’s electric vehicle charger programs allow customers to participate in HG&E’s grid transformation efforts with their own equipment and receive credits for doing so, while also helping to drive down costs for all HG&E customers.
